Win and Pole for Slideways Trans Am Camaro on Debut

Cam Wilson made a successful debut in the Australian Trans Am Series aboard the Slideways Chevrolet Camaro, with pole position backed up by a race win at Lakeside Park.

The weekend netted race results of fourth, second, first and second from the four races, leaving the Fataz Competition Engines prepared machine second in the point standings.

In the first race, overall weekend victor Shannon O’Brien snuck through to take the lead from Wilson at Hungry Corner, while the number 72 car later ran wide at the same corner and had to settle for fourth at the chequered flag.

From the start of the Saturday afternoon race, Wilson forged past Ian Palmer on the opening run to the Karousel, and later made his way past the Mustang of Russell Wright on the pit straight.

A mid-race lockdown slowed the field, with Wilson unable to make an impression on eventual race winner O’Brien after the restart.

Wilson won the jump at the start of Sunday morning’s race, and led throughout to take his first victory in the category, with the field tightly bunched at the head of the field after eight laps.

A conservative tyre strategy for the finale saw Wilson understeer at the Karousel on the opening lap, which allowed O’Brien through to the lead.

Wright then applied pressure throughout, but Wilson held station in second.

“Considering I’ve never done any laps in the car prior to the weekend, I’m pretty happy,” said Wilson.

“To roll out of the pits for the third ever time in qualifying and put it on pole was fantastic, I’m absolutely stoked with that.

“There are some good racers in the field obviously, so that was a fantastic feeling, a highlight of the weekend.

“To finish second for the round behind Shannon, I certainly can’t be disappointed about that, to get pole and a race win, I’m certainly happy enough.

“I learned a fair bit about the car, we didn’t change a thing to suit my style at all.

“The guys at Fataz Competition Engines were just awesome, it was really cool to finally go racing with them.

“Woody and I both agree that we are brothers from way back, Ian, Robbo and Kaye are awesome people to go racing with.

“They are very keen to allow me to dial the car in to what will suit my needs, so we are going to have an actual test day before our next round, so I think we’ll come out very strong from there.”

The Australian Trans Am Series continues with the Ipswich Festival of Cars at Queensland Raceway on May 6-7, while Cam Wilson will next be seen in action in the Keema Excel Cup on April 1-2 at Lakeside Park.
