Slideways Takes Out Australian Title

Slideways Go Karting Australia Director Cam Wilson has shown that his recent race winning form aboard the Slideways Hyundai is no fluke, with a commanding performance to take out the 2016 Circuit Excel Nationals at Morgan Park Raceway.

The unique event was the first national gathering for the ever growing Hyundai Excel class, with a top field of competitors converging on the rural Queensland circuit from as far afield as South Australia.

Wilson, a competitor in a range of categories from go karting to V8 Utes over a distinguished career dominated proceedings, winning all four races contested from pole position.

“Obviously it’s a great result for the team following a massive build up to the Nationals,” said Wilson.

“All credit has to go to Pete and Todd from Peters Motorsport for preparing the car, as well as Dan from Slideways for his assistance on the weekend, the car was really hooked up and never missed a beat.

“The competition out there was really tough, it’s always hard to get ahead in a single make category, but the racing was very fair at the front.

“These Hyundais are an awful lot of fun to drive, they would have to be the most enjoyable form of motorsport I have ever been involved with, and I can’t wait to finish the year off on a high.”

To manage the capacity field, the qualifying and heat races were split into three groups.

Wilson fired his first shot in anger during the opening qualifying session, setting a time that would prove to be 0.4sec faster than the field.

Leading away from the start of the opening heat from South Australian Asher Johnston, Wilson eventually crossed the finishing line after seven circuits 1.8sec clear of what would prove to be his toughest rival, Cam Bartholomew.

The second heat saw Wilson initially come under pressure from Brock Giblin, before Richard Chaseling forged his way through to second place, 1.4sec behind the Slideways machine at the chequered flag.

The fastest 50% pre-final proved to be a straight forward affair, with Bartholomew and Johnston holding station behind Wilson over the 10 lap journey. The final margin of victory was 1.3sec.

Wilson led the field away once more in the 15 lap final, although he was unable to shake off Bartholomew throughout the race.

At the finish, Wilson’s margin of victory was 0.9sec, with a further gap of 14.9sec back to third placed Johnston, who was engaged in a race long battle with the third Queenslander home, Mark Pryor.

The next event for Wilson aboard the Slideways Hyundai Excel is Queensland Raceway’s Ipswich Classic on October 15-16.

After missing a round of the Keema Excel Cup early in the season, Wilson is on a late charge in the point score, and comes into the event on a high after winning at the most recent round at Lakeside Raceway.
